The AREF-EACCR4 Leadership Programme

Applications are still open for the AREF-EACCR4 Leadership Programme, a prestigious initiative designed to support early-career researchers within the consortium. Eligible African researchers must submit their online applications before the extended deadline on 16 October 2026.

How to Apply

To apply for the leadership programme, follow these sequential steps:

  1. Create an account by visiting the AREF Grant Application System.
  2. Check your inbox for a system-generated email sent to your registered address.
  3. Set your password using the instructions provided in that email.
  4. Log in to the portal to access and complete the online application form.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this programme, candidates must meet all the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen of an African country covered under the EACCR4 and GREATLIFE programmes.
  • Employment: You must be currently employed in Africa by a recognized university or a specialist research institution.
  • Career Stage: You must be an early-career researcher who has completed your research education and is beginning to lead your own research group.
  • Academic Qualifications: You must hold a PhD, DPhil, or MD from a recognized academic institution, OR a medical/clinical qualification paired with a research-relevant Master’s degree. These degrees should typically be obtained within the last 10 years. (Candidates exceeding 10 years may apply if they provide a justification, such as career breaks or caring responsibilities).
  • Leadership Roles: You must be responsible for managing or supervising at least one research student or staff member. You should also be actively involved in building research collaborations.
  • Research Focus: You must show clear evidence of being an active member or an early-stage leader of a team conducting Global Health Research.
  • Prior Cohorts: Membership in a previous EDCTP-supported YEARs cohort is highly valued.
  • Core Responsibilities: A significant portion of your current employment role must involve developing and conducting research.
