UVRI selected by WHO as a regional reference labs for COVID-19

Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) has been selected as one of the reference labs for COVID-19 in Africa, to provide genetic information needed for the swift and effective control of COVID-19 and other emerging pathogens. UVRI is also an Africa CDC reference lab. This was revealed by the Minister of Health, Jane Ruth Aceng, while addressing the public on COVID-19 testing in Uganda on the 04th of September 2020 during a press briefing at the Ministry of Health Offices Uganda.

“Allow me to inform you that the Uganda Virus institute (UVRI) has been nominated by the WHO as the center for COVID 19 genomic sequencing for the whole of East and Central Africa”. All the laboratories that have been accredited to carry out COVID 19 testing are continuously assessed and their staff re-oriented at UVRI.

The following are the accredited laboratories in Uganda:

  2. Central Public Health Laboratories (CPHL)
  3. Makerere University College of Health Sciences Laboratory (MAK)
  4. Adjumani Mobile Laboratory
  5. Tororo Mobile Laboratory
  6. Mutukula Point of entry Laboratory
  7. Infectious disease institute Laboratory (IDI)
  8. Mild May Laboratory
  9. Uganda Cancer Institute – Fred Hutchson Lab.

  3. Medipal Hospital Laboratory.
